Sponsored-Shift-at-Ashcroft

A relative whose husband is a resident at Ashcroft Care Home in Chesterfield, recently worked a 10 hour shift in the home. Judith Smith, who is in her 70s, donated the £140 she made during her sponsored shift at Ashcroft and donated it to the Resident’s Social Fund. Judith worked really hard, not just in her shift but also by looking after her husband who lives with dementia.

Home Manager, Yana Whitehouse said, “Judith is great and we had a lot of fun when she was on shift. She displayed so much kindness and caring to all of our residents and I believe she should be recognised for this.”

Two members of staff at Northlea Court Care Home in Cramlington have been nominated for ROCK (Recognition of Care and Kindness) awards. Carol Birch and Lorraine Lewis have been honoured for their kind-hearted and caring approach to their job and were presented with their awards by Amanda Cunningham, Managing Director North East England.

Carol was nominated by Mrs Nancy Prior for consistently supporting residents to participate in activities to enrich their daily lives. Lorraine was also nominated by Mrs Nancy Prior for always making time to talk to the residents and always being caring and funny.

Tracie White, Regional Manager, commented: “Our employees are our most valuable resource and the reason we are able to deliver the best possible care to meet residents’ needs. It is a delight to reward Carol and Lorraine this way, and show appreciation for their exceptional hard work and dedication that helps to set Four Seasons Health Care apart.”

Riverside-Fundraising

Staff and supporters at Riverside View Care Home in Darlington donned their walking boots to climb an iconic North Yorkshire hill to raise funds for their residents.

The dedicated team were joined by friends and family of the home’s residents to climb Roseberry Topping, a landmark 330m high hill near Great Ayton.

Despite the poor weather, the team managed to reach the summit and their efforts raised money to spend on activities and trips for Riverside View residents.

The walk was one of a variety of fundraising events organised by staff who continually raise money for the residents fund.

Home manager, Claire Westmorland said, “We battled through the wind and rain and reached the top of Roseberry Topping. Staff and relatives took part and we raised about £400 for the residents fund which was a great success.”

Enjoying-the-tea-dance

Residents from several Four Seasons care homes in Northumberland revived the traditional tea dance when they get together for a social afternoon on Wednesday 25th March at the New Delaval & Newsham Working Men’s Club. They were joined by friends, relatives and staff, as well as members of the local community.

As well as taking to the dance floor, guests were invited to take part in a singalong session and bingo. There was a range of refreshments served and a chance to take part in a free raffle.

Tracie White, Regional Manager for Four Seasons in the North East said, “The social afternoon is a great way for residents to get out to enjoy themselves, to meet people from other Four Seasons care homes and engage with members of the wider local community. We are planning to make the event a regular monthly occurrence.”

The afternoon and early evening dances, with a civilised break for tea and refreshments, are coming back into vogue. Before the 1950s, tea dances were a popular way to socialise; however, they declined in the 60s as the club and disco scene emerged. They are now beginning to make a return to popularity, possibly linked to the success of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.

Shauna-rooney-staff-nurse

Shauna Rooney, a Staff Nurse at Rush Hall Care Home in Limavady, has been shortlisted for the 2015 national Nursing Standard Nurse Awards.

Qualifying as a nurse only two years ago, Shauna was nominated for the award by Gary Cousins, Infection Control and Clinical Development Nurse for Four Seasons Health Care Northern Ireland, after implementing a successful Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) pilot programme in the home. Shauna also helped other staff members to develop their knowledge of IPC and understand how the theory could be best applied in clinical practice.

Avoiding the spread of infections is important, particularly within a care home environment, as older people tend to have a weaker immune system. Additionally care homes often provide care for residents who may be living with a cognitive impairment and therefore are not as aware of the risk of infection. As a result, staff need to be able to help with hygiene measures to avoid preventable illness.

Gary said, “We are delighted that Shauna is a finalist for the 2015 Nursing Standard Nurse Awards. Her dedication to developing her fellow staff members’ understanding of best IPC care meant that the pilot programme was a resounding success, and we wish her the best of luck.”

The Nursing Standard Nurse Awards recognise nursing professionals across the UK who have demonstrated clinical excellence and whose innovations have helped to improve the quality of patient care. Finalists from each category will attend the award ceremony on 1st May at The Savoy Hotel in London, and all winners will be considered for the overall award, RCN Nurse of the Year 2015.
