Edinburgh Care Home wins National Award for its Outstanding Dementia Care
Four Seasons' Castlegreen Care Home in Edinburgh has been crowned Dementia Service of the Year at a national care awards, in recognition of its outstanding provision for residents with dementia.
The 60-bed care home on Greendykes Road, was highlighted at this year's Scottish Care Awards that recognise individual and team efforts in providing care across different environments.
Castlegreen Care Home provides specialist dementia care, which is accredited under Four Seasons' innovation PEARL Specialist Dementia Services programme.
The scheme looks to promote best practice in dementia care and to reduce the use of psychotropic drugs.
To achieve its PEARL status, the care home was assessed under a comprehensive review process, and demonstrated high levels of care and achievement for a set of defined standards against one hundred and fifty different criteria.
Staffing levels and training formed a key element of the assessment process. Castlegreen was measured on the training provided and how that training is transferred into practice, with the home needing to meet set benchmarks and to demonstrate positive results.
Four Seasons Health Care developed its pioneering approach to dementia care, the PEARL Specialist Dementia Services Scheme, 18 months ago. The company has been awarded for its excellence and illustration of best practice in developing dementia care as a specialist care service, by the Excellence Network in June 2009.
In Scotland, there are an estimated 69,500 people with dementia. Alzheimer Scotland predicts these figures will rise to 127,000 by 2031. There are currently 700,000 people in the UK with the disease, and in the next 30 years this number is expected to double, according to Department of Health figures.
Eileen Burns care home manager at Castlegreen, said: "We are delighted to receive this award and to be highlighted nationally for our dementia care.
"As a disease, dementia can be very distressing. We have found that the residents with dementia whom we care for often eat and sleep better, are more alert and coherent and generally lead a better quality of life. Castlegreen is a wonderful care home and I'm very proud to be part of it."
