Four Seasons' Eco-Nursery Flies the Green Flag for Glasgow

Buchanan Nursery, part of Four Season's Health Care, is celebrating after becoming the first private nursery in East Dunbartonshire Council to be awarded a second Green Flag Award, in recognition of its eco-friendliness.

The nursery, which offers quality childcare for children aged 6 weeks to five years old, will be officially presented with its flag by East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson, at a special ceremony to be held at the nursery on 18 December.

Green Flag Awards are part of the international Eco-Schools programme. The scheme offers nursery, primary, secondary and special schools a recognised programme for promoting environmental awareness and action throughout their school.

In East Dunbartonshire the Eco Schools programme aims to makes environmental education an important part of every day school life and the green flag award is the highest achievement in the campaign.

Buchanan Nursery, based on Grampian Way in Bearsden, joined the Eco-Schools programme in August 2006 before going on to achieve its first Green Flag in June 2007.

The nursery has since been recognised for its ongoing efforts in tackling key environmental issues like litter, recycling, healthy living and conservation.

Activities undertaken at the nursery include; raising awareness for pollution and energy waste by encouraging families to walk rather than take the car; promoting the need to preserve water resources, with the children designing posters on the theme; plus recycling and the promotion of issues of enterprise, with empty glass jars turned in to Christmas gifts.

A bird hide has been created in the garden for bird watching and the nursery operates a recycling centre, with the children monitoring and creating graphs of the waste received.

In Glasgow, over 220 schools have already registered for the Eco-Schools programme. Currently only five schools have gained a second green flag.

Julie Harvey, Buchanan Nursery manager, said: "We are delighted to be awarded a second green flag. All the children, staff and parents at the nursery have really got behind the project and it's great to see all their hard work is being recognised.

"We have tried to introduce a range of different activities for the children, which encourage them to think about the environment they live in and the part they can play in its preservation. There has been a real community feel about the projects we have been running as we've tried to involve not only the children, but staff, parents and local groups. It's also been a lot of fun!"

Councillor Una Walker, Convener of East Dunbartonshire Council Education Committee, said: "I would like to congratulate the pupils, staff and parents of Buchanan Nursery for receiving their second Green Flag. To achieve Eco-Schools status takes a lot of hard work and dedication but to receive two Green Flags is exceptional. In East Dunbartonshire we actively promote environmental education in all of our nurseries and schools to ensure that all the children have a greater understanding of how important it is and how their input can help protect the world they live in."
