Art student Charlotte Owen has been painting murals of Barnsley in Highstone Mews Care Home. Charlotte has worked as a Care Assistant at the home for six years and started the project after the home asked their residents what they would like. She has already transformed one end of a corridor into a train station complete with a train carriage and resident passengers and another of a spitfire fighter. They took photos of the residents dressed up so they could be passengers. It is based on the 1940’s so it is in keeping with their memories. Care Home Manager ‘Karen Hugill said they were keen to improve the experience of residents with dementia. “We really wanted a big drive on dementia care as we don’t want people just sitting around bored. The residents came up with the themes and Charlotte has done a fantastic job creating them”.

A resident of Bethany Nursing Home in Osborne Park, Florence has knitted a lovely multi–coloured scarf for the Dean when she heard he was leaving St John’s Malone for St Anne’s.

Dean Mann held regular services in the Bethany Home for the residents during his time at St John’s, and when he returned on December 15 for a Carol Service Florence presented him with his timely gift.

Sheila Gibson, who organises the services, said: “Florence took great pride in knitting the scarf for the Dean. She had to do it a little bit at a time because she has pains in her hands and her shoulders but she has done a fabulous job!”

Thanks to Florence Ringland, aged 93, Dean Mann had a nice warm neck during his hours on the Cathedral steps collecting money for Belfast charities.

Norman Hursty, a resident at Victoria Lodge Care Home in Sunderland, displayed his talent for mouth painting in an exhibition last year at the Care Home - the pictures speak for themselves, he is truly talented! Residents and staff had the pleasure of his artwork being displayed in their home and the exhibition was attended by BBC and Tyne Tees news team. It was also reported in the Sunderland Echo and people from the local community attended.

Working towards the PEARL accreditation has enhanced the care we provide to the residents on the Dementia Care Unit.
