Residents are encouraged to keep dancing at Tea Party

Residents from 8 Four Seasons care homes in Northumberland revived the traditional tea dance when they got together for a social afternoon on Wednesday 21st December 2016 at the New Delaval & Newsham Working Men’s Club. They were joined by friends, relatives and staff, and members of the local community.

As well as taking to the dance floor, guests were invited to take part in a sing-along session and bingo. There was a range of refreshments served and a chance to take part in a raffle.

Rob Heane, Regional Manager for Four Seasons in Northumberland, said, “The social afternoon is a great way for residents to get out enjoying themselves, to meet people from other Four Seasons care homes and engage with members of the wider local community. This event is a regular occurrence, and it’s great to see it go from strength to strength each time we run it. Here’s to the next one.”

The afternoon and early evening dances, with a civilised break for tea and refreshments, are coming back into vogue. Before the 1950s, tea dances were a popular way to socialise; however, they declined in the 60s as the club and disco scene emerged. They are now beginning to make a return to popularity, possibly linked to the success of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.

Residents and the care team have been busy bees at Doulton Court Care Home in Sutton-on-Sea.

The home has been undergoing some TLC recently as its been having it’s wooden windows and doors replaced.

Joyce Turner, Home Manager, said: “The workmen are doing a fantastic job, liaising with our carers to minimise the disruption to our residents. Within one week almost all of the windows are replaced and look fantastic. Our very own ‘Domestic Dave’ has been staying late each day to clean up and ensure the disturbance to the residents is minimal. We’d be totally lost without him. I want to thank the whole team for their continued help and support whilst the renovations have been going on. Go team Doulton Court!”

Whilst the windows were being replaced, the residents were taking part in their very own exercise class.

“The class is always a firm favourite with the residents,” explained Joyce. “It helps to keep them agile and is great fun. It’s definitely one activity on the calendar that the residents look forward too constantly.”

Kate Wilson, Home Manager, said: “Luna is the newest member of our team, and has made herself right at home since joining us. She came in one stormy night and sheltered from the weather in one of our units. She is so loving and spends most of the day sat on the resident’s knees having cuddles. A member of the care team donated a large cushion bed for Luna, and it’s definitely a hit with her.”
