Dorothy and Jane enjoy reminiscing

Dorothy and Jane enjoy reminiscing

Dorothy, age 90, lives at Guthrie House in Midlothian, Edinburgh.

A social butterfly, Dorothy often chats to colleagues in the home about her life. In the video, Dorothy speaks to PAL Jane about being a busy mother bringing up her eight children and the importance of young people in her life.

Guthrie she comments has enabled her to continue to feel young because of the visits from nursery children who come and spend time with residents in the home and take part in activities (find out about the benefits of intergenerational care here).

Dorothy, who used to be a nurse herself, also spoke highly of the nurses and carers in the home commenting that she finds them “very helpful” and “very well looked after and will always think that nursing is an excellent job”.

Dorothy enjoys outings on the bus which give her the ‘chance to experience something different and a change from everyday life’ . The food at the home, is also a big hit with Dorothy: “we always get good food, home cooked meals enjoys the soup meal and that she considers herself and the other residents very lucky people in the home.”

PAL Jane adds: “I’m fairly new to Guthrie House and when I first started, Dorothy and the other residents made me feel very welcome. I love organising activities for the residents to enjoy and get inspiration from listening to their stories about the things they enjoy throughout their lives.”
