When we decide to put our loved ones in a care home, it can often be a hard thing to do. However, we know it’s the right thing to do to keep our loved ones safe.
10-year-old Alex’s Great Grandma Betty, moved into Brimington Care Home in Chesterfield following deterioration in her health.
Over the next few months, Alex watched as his Great Grandma made new friends and had some fun. He was so impressed by what he saw, that he wrote a presentation for his school about the care his Great Grandma received.
Alex wrote: “Being kind and caring to the elderly is very important. In Chesterfield my Great Grandma, Betty, was put in Brimington Care Home as she was frail and quite ill. The carers at the home were brilliant and made my Great Grandma’s last few months the best they could have been. The carers looked after her so well and me and my family couldn’t thank them enough.
“The staff at the home often sat and chatted to my Great Grandma and they got people to come in and sing and entertain everyone in the home. They would also throw parties and everyone who wanted to could get up and have a dance.
“My Great Grandma made a few friends at the home and although she has dementia she still enjoyed their company. The carers kindly let us see her every time we visited Chesterfield and we appreciated that as at times we didn’t think she had long left to live. They always made us feel very welcome and offered us drinks and snacks.
"My Great Grandma became quite popular in the home. Her friends and the carers thought she had a really nice personality and a good sense of humour.”
Josephine Jackson, Home Manager, said: “Alex told over 100 pupils in his school about Betty’s stay with us. We all thought his words were wonderful and wanted to share Alex’s experience with you all. Thank you Alex for your kind words.
“Sadly Alex’s Great Grandma passed away in our care, however the family tried their up-most to raise as much money as they could for the home so we can provide special experiences for our other residents. I want to thank the whole family for everything they’ve done for Brimington Care Home.”
