On the 17th December 2016, the team at Wansbeck Care Home in Choppington celebrated their Dementia Care Framework accreditation.
The whole home undertook the training helping them to understand what it’s like to live with dementia and how to empathise with residents who may get frustrated from time to time.
Whilst the team underwent their learning they began to find out more about what type of things the residents in their care had on their bucket lists.
Denise Hyden, Home Manager, explained: “During the training we discovered that Kath, a resident here at Wansbeck had a lifelong dream of sitting on a horse. So the team set about fulfilling this wish with a very special experience for Kath.
“Everything was set for Kath’s wish to come true. On the day of the accreditation party, she was introduced to Smurf, a miniature pony. The effect this had on Kath was lovely. She sat and reminisced about her dreams as a child and how much horses mean to her.
“It was great to see we could make a difference in Kath’s life. To top it off, Pony Hire, the organisation who brought Smurf in has agreed to support Kath to achieving her dream of sitting on a horse.”
The individualised and personalised approach of our dementia care that is being promoted through the Dementia Care Framework are seeing resident’s wishes being fulfilled across the organisation.
