Busy bees help the birds in Thamesmead

Residents at Marlborough Court Care Home in Thamesmead celebrated World Animal Day by creating new food containers for the local wildlife to enjoy in their garden.

World Animal Day is celebrated on Tuesday 4th October each year and aims to raise the status of animals to improve their welfare standards around the globe, making the world a better place for animals.

Hayley Mercer, Personal Activities Leader explained: “The residents were working like little busy bees filling up the bird containers with food, before hanging them on the trees in our back garden for the wild parrots and other wildlife to enjoy. The residents had a great system going and I think we’ve got enough food dotted around the garden to keep the birds happy for a while.”

In the afternoon, the residents got the chance to get up close and personal to some very friendly birds.

Hayley Mercer, told us: “We were visited by an organisation which specialised in wild birds. The trainer brought a couple of owls with them, which the residents could stroke and look at. Some of our braver residents even held the birds which was a fantastic and special experience for them.”
