We all have that one person in our life who is our hero. This honour was bestowed upon Fred (Freddie) Evans, a former Portsmouth FC centre forward who now resides at Woodcot Lodge Care Home in Gosport, by children from Siskin Junior School.
“The children have been visiting the home on a regular basis as part of their ‘Life Enrichment Programme’. The effect they’ve had on the residents and vice versa has been fantastic to watch,” explains Home Manager Vickie Wylde. “The relationship they had with Fred was fantastic, and the fact that he could bestow upon them words of wisdom with regards to the beautiful game enamored the children to continue with their dreams to become the next football superstar.”
The children at Siskin Junior School, held a leaving assembly for their Year 6 pupils, and they kindly invited Freddie along as guest of honour. Freddie duly obliged and alongside representatives of Portsmouth FC attended including Ray Crawford (former Portsmouth and England striker), Jake Payne (founding member of the supporters trust), Barry Cook (chairman of Fareham town football club) and Roger Higgins (member of the supporters trust), went and watched the students. After the ceremony, Freddie was presented with something very special, a tie and England Cap, the same as the national team. They took the FA Cup and during the after show party with the children, had lots of photos taken and signing autographs
Vickie Wylde, Home Manager, explained: “The activities team were instrumental in organising and facilitating links with Siskin Junior School, Karonann Naylor and Rhonnda Bennett. Dan Kington - Woodcot’s Head Chef, who has links with Portsmouth football club, organised the attendance of the clubs members. Congratulations once again to Woodcot team who go above and beyond their scope of duty to ensure our residents have a happy and fulfilled life. I couldn’t be more proud.”
