At the end of April, Yorkshire hosted the second biggest cycling event – behind the prestigious Tour de France – the Tour de Yorkshire.
The race route went directly past Woodlea Care Home in Doncaster, where residents waited patiently for the cyclists to arrive.
Amanda Lees, Home Manger, explained: “Once we realised the cycling route ran past our home, the residents and the team got very excited. Mary and Betty, two of our residents here, are huge cycling enthusiasts, and got to work creating flags and other decorations to put up, all with the aim of encouraging the riders on.
“On race day itself, the residents decorated the outsides of the home and waited in the sunshine for the riders. They whooped, cheered and waved their flags as the riders went past. Once all of the excitement was finished, we settled down for a drink and a piece of our Tour de Yorkshire cake.
“The residents had a fantastic time. It was great to see the riders so close as they raced to the finish line.”
