Had you walked into Hallgarth Care Home in Durham on 25th January 2017, you may have been mistaken into thinking you’d walked into a little Scottish glen.
Angela Muir, Home Manager, explained: “We had a canny gathering of residents, family members and friends in our poetry club to wish Rabbie Burns many happy returns of the day.
“We talked about his life, this handsome, hard drinking, philandering man, could be some creative genius. We started in Scotland with a range of poems including ‘Red Red Rose’, ‘My Heart is in the Highlands’ and ‘I Love my Jean’ to other poets who had written their own thoughts on Scotland.
“Everyone found it surprising how many of us had Scottish family ties and we put a poster up displaying all the family tartans. To finish the day we had a lovely cup of tea, with shortbread in the shape of a Scotty dog.”
