As we say farewell to Shrove Tuesday for another year, let’s reflect on all the fun that was had at The Sycamore and Poplars Care Home in Warsop. The team decided to arrange a ‘flipping’ contest for residents to compete for the best pancake flip.

Before all the fun of eating the pancakes, the team set up their flipping contest. They made foil plates for the residents to use to flip their pancakes. The competition was stiff but Freda Tomlinson and Mary Lunn came out on top as the best flippers of Sycamore and Poplars. After the winners had been announced, everyone sat down for pancakes with the fillings of choice.

Karen Gilbert, Home Manager, told us “A huge well done to our flipping winners – they were spectacular! We had a lovely afternoon but it’s safe to say we had enough pancakes to last us until next year”.

As part of their Burns Night celebrations, Woodcot Lodge Care Home in Gosport decided to arrange a Celtic themed party for the residents to enjoy. The home was transformed and dressed head to toe in tartan prints to get everyone in the Scottish spirit.

The team provided costumes for residents to try including traditional Scottish dress which everyone wanted to model. They honoured Robert Burns by reading his poems and spoke about the memories they had of Scotland. Kath Roberts (pictured) especially enjoyed getting dressed up.

Vickie Wylde, Home Manager, told us “The team worked really hard to make sure everyone had a lovely afternoon – the costumes were great! We even people up on their feet dancing and singing. We all had a wonderful party”.

Despite the cold weather, Howdon Care Centre in Howdon decided to take a day trip to the nearby coast for a stroll along the sea front. The team and residents travelled to both Newbiggin-by-the-sea and Tynemouth on their outing.

Although not ice cream weather, everyone enjoyed an ice cream whilst they walked around Newbiggin. The residents enjoyed a morning of sight-seeing which got them talking about all the memories they had of visiting Newbiggin on family holidays. They then travelled to Tynemouth for a walk along the seafront to take in the fresh sea air.

Ruth Todd, Home Manager, told us “The cold weather didn’t put any of us off – we all enjoyed an ice cream and a walk along the coast. Roll on the summer so it won’t be as cold!”

Earlsferry House Care Home in Elie was hit hard by the recent Storm Henry which left them with damage to the building after a tree fell against the wall. The team had to work quickly and safely to ensure nobody was hurt in the devastation.

The team had to evacuate 10 residents from the home whose rooms had been affected by the falling tree. The team moved them to a neighbouring care home whilst the tree was still against the home.

After the storm passed, it appeared the tree had only caused minor damage and could be repaired easily. The team have all been awarded a ROCK Award for their bravery and dedication in making sure everyone was safe from the storm.
