Hallgarth-Care-Home-Durham-Squirrels-Nov-2017

20 Nov 2017

Although Hallgarth Care Home is on the edge of the busy Durham City Centre, it has a long private back garden, which for many years has been home to a family of squirrels. These critters provide hours of entertainment.

Angela Muir, Home Manager, said: “The residents love sitting in our very own bar and watching nature at its best. We have bird boxes, feeders and a bird bath. These are used by a family of Blue Tits, but the real characters are the squirrels. We have a line going from tree to tree that the nut and seed feeders hang on, and the squirrels have mastered the art of walking along them commando style.

“This is the third line we’ve had to put up at the squirrels got the idea of chewing through the line so all the feeders end up on the ground, much easier for them to collect the nuts! Or they would chew through the plastic feeders so the bottom would fall out. We now give them different puzzles to challenge them before they can get the nuts. They are very entertaining to watch.”
