Residents get connected as Four Seasons rolls out Wi-Fi to all care homes

Four Seasons Health Care has introduced Wi-Fi into all of its care homes and residents have been taking advantage of the opportunities that internet access provides. They have readily adapted to using the technology to keep in touch more frequently with relatives or friends who live far away.

Violet Amies at The Maltings Care Home in Fakenham said: “Having Wi-Fi in the home means that my daughter and I can sit together and use Skype to talk to my other daughter who lives in the United States, which is much easier than trying to arrange a telephone call. It’s great to be able to hear her news more regularly and to be able to see each other and share photos online.”

At Cossins House Care Home in Cobham a resident who used to be a ballet dancer and is now living with dementia, regularly watches ballet videos online. This helps to stimulate positive memories, as well as encouraging her to reminisce about her earlier experiences with other residents and staff members. Many residents are also shopping for books and other small items online in addition to adding to their Kindle libraries.

Alistair How, Chief Operating Officer of Four Seasons, the UK’s leading care homes operator, said: “It has been a significant investment to upgrade our IT systems and install Wi-Fi in all of our care homes, but it is one that we consider to be very worthwhile. It has enhanced our residents’ enjoyment of life in their home. They are able to connect more frequently via social media services and email and they can also keep up to date with their personal interests more readily, as well as maintaining their independence by shopping online.”

As delayed transfers of care remain at record highs, how can we reduce unnecessary hospital stays for older people? That was the key question at an HSJ event held in association with Four Seasons Health Care.

The roundtable heard that the healthcare system often finds reasons not to deal with care home residents and looked at the success of an innovative collaboration between the NHS and care homes in Belfast.

With a collaborative approach between care homes and the NHS, older people are able to leave hospital and receive expert care, whilst assessing whether their long term future would be in their current home or a local care home. “The idea is that it would provide short term rehabilitation in conjunction with the two trusts in that area. The joint partnerships with the trusts I’ve worked with have just been amazing, and that’s what makes it work”, explained Janice Brown, Four Seasons’ regional manager for the Belfast and Newtownabbey area.

In addition to the improvements from a collaborative solution, South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust reported that the joint partnership approach of providing a bed in a care home reduced their yearly cost by more than half.

Havencourt Care Home in Stonehaven has been accredited for a pioneering dementia care approach.

The care team at Havencourt Care Home is celebrating being accredited for a radically different approach of care for people living with dementia.

The Dementia Care Framework is a unique step forward in the personalisation of care for people living with dementia. The care team uses exclusive purpose-designed technology to help build and continuously update a picture of each resident’s individual experience of their care and their physical, psychological and emotional well-being, so that their care can be adjusted to their changing needs.

The pioneering home is part of Four Seasons Health Care which spent two years developing and testing the new approach. The home hosted an event for care commissioners, other health and social care professionals and relatives to introduce the Dementia Care Framework to them during a harbour and sea themed party on Tuesday 11th April 2017 which was even attended by Stuart the Lobster.

John Kirk, Managing Director for Four Seasons in Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man, Bristol and South West England said: “This is next generation dementia care to make life better for the person with dementia and we are excited to offer it. A vital part of the Framework is the bespoke support and training the team throughout the home receives with additional support and training for those, working within our dementia services. This goes beyond the practicalities of caring for someone with dementia and through simulation gives them a deeper understanding of what it is like to live with dementia.”

In addition to the support and training, there are three additional components to the Dementia Care Framework – personal care reviews, Resident and Family Charters.

At the heart of the Dementia Care Framework is a personal care review process which is continuously updated electronically by care staff to give a comprehensive and current picture of each resident.

Thought to be the first of its type worldwide, it is based on 320 recognised standards, including NICE Guidelines (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) and Alzheimer’s Society best practice guidance. It replaces paper-based audits that are slow and almost always behind the changing care needs of the person.

The resident and family charters were developed in consultation with residents, family members, health and social care professionals and care teams, taking account of over 400 comments. The resident charter sets out their rights, the standards of care they can expect and commitment to provide for their personal needs and preferences.

The family charter, sets out the support that they can expect to receive and how they can input to planning their relative’s care.

Only when a home achieves key standards within the Dementia Care Framework does it receive Four Seasons Accreditation for the quality of its dementia care.

Residents, relatives and the care team at Bracknell Care Home in Bracknell have been enjoying lots of different activities thanks to the hard work of Personal Activities Leader Tasha Corbett.

Residents enjoyed raising money for Red Nose Day. They baked cakes and created the Bracknell Brass Band to entertain people all in the name of the good cause. The residents raised £250 for the cause which they were all very happy with.

They also created a family tree using their hand prints as leaves which act as a lovely reminder of how much the residents are loved by the care team and their families.

Natsayi Dunira, Home Manager, said: “We enjoy providing activities that are meaningful to the residents. They thoroughly enjoy any activity that Tasha puts on for them. Keep your eyes peeled for more activities coming your way at Bracknell.”

Residents from Westroyd House Care Home in Shepshed have been getting crafty as they created some Easter bonnets and boaters.

Cara Frayling, Home Manager, said: “Everyone really enjoyed creating their own bonnets and boaters. The residents were getting really competitive with each other, as they wanted to make their bonnet or boater the very best. Even some of the care team got involved, so we have an Easter headpiece off. It was a lovely bit of fun.”
