Yvonne Fovargue was recently invited to Shawcross Care Home in Ashton in Makerfield as part of their Summer Fayre celebrations. During her visit she completed a Dementia Experience – which is designed to help people understand what it is like to live in a world with Dementia.
Home Manager Peter McCarten stated: “Yvonne kindly agreed to come to Shawcross to meet the residents and their families during our Summer Fayre. During the course of the visit we asked Yvonne whether she would like to experience what it is like to live with Dementia by completing our Dementia Care Framework ‘Dementia Experience’.”
The Dementia Care Framework which includes this experience has specific training elements to allow staff working at the home understand all aspects of Dementia Care. The Care Home became accredited in September 2016 and there have been almost 100 experiences completed by staff and visitors since.
Following completing the experience Yvonne Fovargue stated: “It truly was an amazing experience to be able to understand how people with Dementia live their everyday lives. It certainly was insightful and helped me to understand how debilitating Dementia really is.”
