CQC finds ‘improvement in all areas’ at Hemsworth Park

After a challenging start to this year when it was rated ‘Inadequate’ in a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection, Hemsworth Park Care Home in Pontefract has taken great strides to improve standards over the past six months, re-establishing the home as a place where residents say ‘the staff are kind’ and they ‘feel happy’.

Hemsworth Park’s most recent inspection took place in September, taking it out of Special Measures and reporting significant improvement in all areas (safe, effective, caring, responsive, well-led).

Comments included the following:

We found the provider; registered manager and staff had worked hard to build on the improvements we had found at the last inspection. We found improvements in all areas.

People told us staff were caring and kind towards them. We saw staff were genuinely caring and spoke in a compassionate way to people and their relatives.

People told us they were happy with the care they received and we saw privacy and dignity promoted throughout the inspection.

Manager Liza Murphy explained how the turnaround was achieved -

“In a nutshell; a lot of hard work. Colleagues pulled together across our three units and worked very well as a team – everyone was determined to make a difference and make Hemsworth Park the home we knew it could and should be.

“We aimed for consistency every day – finding and fixing problems, making sure audits were thorough and honest and focusing on compliance, ensuring all documentation was completed and correct. Instilling and maintaining good organisation has been key.

“We also made effective use of the Quality of Life data and introduced ‘Ten at 10’ meetings to give colleagues the chance to raise issues and identify solutions, from which jobs and actions were delegated appropriately, giving everyone a sense of ownership.

“Colleagues are smiling and positive and Quality of Life feedback from residents, families and visiting professionals has been really good.

“The CQC report made it clear that in most areas we were close to getting a ‘Good’ rating - they just need to see sustainability. That is our next goal. We had our first new admission at the end of last month so it’s definitely onwards and upwards for Hemsworth Park.”
