Nursery children and care home residents bridge the generations with music

Children from a pre-school nursery and elderly residents of a care home in Crewe connected across the generations by making music and singing together.

Eight children, aged 2-4 years from Beechwood Nursery visited Cypress Court Care Home this week (6 December) where they got together with 10 residents, some of whom are in their 90’s. The age difference didn’t matter as they enjoyed playing musical instruments and singing popular children’s songs, story- telling and games, along with a lot of smiling and laughter.

Stacey Barlow, activities leader at Cypress Court, said: “It was heartwarming to see the interaction between the children and the residents. Everyone enjoyed themselves so much.”

John Hart, a resident in the home, said: “The children were amazing. They knew all of the words to the songs and helped us, even when we were a little bit stuck.”

Sylvia Jones, another resident said: “There’s something about seeing children have fun that makes you feel young again.”

Stephanie Metcalf, Nursery Manager, said: “The children have had a really lovely morning. It was nice seeing everyone singing along and smiling. The children just related naturally to the older people and were more than happy to help them to get involved with playing the instruments. Although it was a lot of fun for everyone it was also helpful to broaden the children’s horizons and help them to develop their social skills and confidence.”

The musical session was run by Frances Donkin of Rhythm Time, which helps stimulate young children’s skills development through fun music making. She said: “This was a wonderful event that brought the two generations together. There’s always something special about watching children enjoy themselves and compelling for the elderly to join in. “

The event was organised in partnership with Ableworld, Crewe, who make mobility aids for older people.
