Four Seasons Care Homes are Going for Gold in the Winter Olympics!

Residents at Four Seasons Care Homes across the UK will be taking part in their own Winter Olympic Games while supporting Team GB in their quest for medals in Beijing.

The 2022 Winter Olympics will be held from 4th to 20th February and our care homes are holding ‘Going for Gold’ themed events with activities including torch relays with local community groups, games, exercise, arts & crafts, sporting memories and an exploration of Chinese culture and food.

In the lead-up to the games, residents are creating Olympic torches, flags and banners in their arts and crafts activities to decorate the homes. Reminiscence sessions are bringing back memories from previous Olympics with favourite moments being Torvill and Dean winning gold for their historic Boléro ice dance in 1984 and Eddie the Eagle winning hearts for his ski jumping in 1988, despite finishing last!

It’s not just about famous sporting legends however, as residents are being encouraged to share their own memorable sporting moments. From winning the egg and spoon race at school to playing sport at national level, we’re discovering we have many of our own sporting stars with fascinating stories to tell, including an Olympian cross-country skier who competed in the 1956 Winter Games held at Cortina a’Ampezzo in Italy.

After watching the opening ceremony together on the big screen while sipping hot chocolate or enjoying a snowball cocktail, residents will be inspired to go for gold themselves. The homes’ Magic Moments Coordinators have devised a series of activities designed for residents of all abilities to take part in, including table top ice cube curling, snowball bowling, cross-country quizzing and armchair ice dancing!

The ‘Going for Gold’ events will run for the duration of the Winter Olympics, culminating with celebratory closing ceremony parties, the perfect opportunity for residents to show off their medal haul!

Steve Gardner, Head of Product Development at Four Seasons Health Care Group, said: “Our Olympic themed events are inspired by the philosophy of bringing people together from varied cultures and backgrounds and provide a platform to achieve. The programme will offer something for all our residents to take part in and are designed to stimulate the mind, body and soul.

"Every resident will have an opportunity to share sporting memories which we will use to create meaningful engagements and celebrate in all our homes. Activities that promote health and well-being are an important part of our Magic Moments activities programme and we are all really looking forward to ‘Going for Gold’ this month!”
