Residents at Four Seasons care homes across the UK are enjoying fun and effective new exercise sessions specially designed for older people and called Oomph!

Oomph! is part of the Four Seasons Health Care’s ‘Magic Moments Together’ activities programme which focuses on the mind, body and soul. Magic Moments team members are participating in a training programme to enable them to lead varied exercise sessions that help residents to stay active and engaged.

The chair-based exercise and movement classes are set to music and use props including pom poms and colourful scarves to really bring the sessions to life. The programme has been developed with the support of ‘Oomph! Wellness', an award-winning social enterprise and provider of fun, inclusive and effective exercise and activity programmes for older adults.

Proven benefits

The Oomph! exercise programme is dedicated to transforming the health and quality of life of older people by improving physical mobility, social interaction and mental stimulation.

During a trial period in the Four Seasons Group’s brighterkind care homes, residents gave the classes a resounding endorsement, with 95% saying the sessions had a positive impact on their health and all saying they made them feel happy. 80% of team members said they saw a significant improvement in social interaction amongst residents.

Four Seasons Group Head of Product Development, Sally Harrison-Exton, said: “The new Oomph! sessions will run twice a week and support our Magic Moments Together programme which is all based around improving our residents’ mental, physical, and social wellbeing and promoting a better quality of life within a happy home.”

Making a real difference

Barbara from the Magic Moments team at Westroyd House Care Home has been running the Oomph! classes since passing her training course last month and said: “The sessions have been a real success and our residents are loving the different exercises. I have seen a great improvement in mood and I definitely think the exercises improve our residents’ well-being.”

Resident Cynthia added: “The sessions make me feel happy and I really look forward to doing the exercises.”

Over at Park Lane Care Home, Magic Moments team member Kathleen said: “It was really exciting to be really involved in something different, our residents were laughing and engaging and have already been asking when the next class is.”

At Doulton Court Care Home, resident Michael threw himself into the rock ‘n’ roll themed session and said: “This was absolutely brilliant and made me think about when I used to go out dancing!” And resident Virginia added: “This made me so happy, thank you for introducing me to something new.”

Team member Coral said: Michael and Virginia are new to our home so this was a brilliant opportunity for them to engage with other residents and team members. This wonderful new activity has made such a positive impact – we can’t wait to shake our pom poms again!”
