Back in May, Pat came to see her husband Nev, a resident at Regents View Care Home in Hetton-le-Hole and out of the blue he asked Pat if she would renew her vows to him. At first Pat was a little taken aback, but after a couple of days thinking it over, she told Nev she would be delighted to renew their vows and reaffirm the love they had for each other.
All staff were happy to help and the home’s regular supplier of artificial flowers, Floral Image, offered to donate some flowers for the day to help make it even more special.
Pat has always taken the lead on the organisation of weddings and other functions the church may have on, and as a result she found it difficult to allow others to arrange things for her, despite staff insisting that it was her special day and time to be spoilt. But after a couple of weeks, Pat decided to relax and maybe take a leaf out of Nev’s book and watch things unfold from a distance, and in the end she was so appreciative and proud of what the home had pulled together.
The big day arrived, not only to celebrate and renew their vows but also to mark 54 years of marriage on that very day. Pat was nervous but luckily her great-grandson kept in check – a proud moment for all!
Nev, on the other hand, was laid back and enjoying the moment, living it up with his family and the guests that had arrived to help them celebrate the day.
Pastor Meldrum who delivered the service, had known both Nev and Pat since they were married 54 years before, and the service celebrated the ups, the downs, the tears and the laughter.
It was very symbolic and told a story about Nev and Pat’s life together, demonstrating that no matter how hard life can be, if they had each they could take on the world.
Finally, family, friends, residents and staff from Regents View enjoyed watching Nev and Pat sway to ‘I Love You Because’ by Jim Reeves, which was classed as the first dance of the afternoon, after which they cut their cake together and watched everyone enjoy themselves. A special, happy day for Nev and Pat’s family and friends – and everyone at Regents View Care Home.
