The Cedars and Larches Care Home in Ilkeston has been working with Derbyshire Age UK on a 'Zing my Zimmer' project to reduce falls and hospital admissions by encouraging the appropriate and safe use of walking aids.
The fun and personalised activity aims to help keep residents active and confident as they move around on foot.
Having shared details of their hobbies and interests, favourite colours and ideas, residents then took part in a two day workshop with Age UK to decorate and personalise their walking aids to make them easy to identify. They were also able to incorporate small bags for snacks, tissues, hair bobbles and other little essentials.
Activities Coordinator Alison Richards described the activity as 'great fun and very successful' and following the Derbyshire pilot, Age UK now has plans to roll the scheme out to other areas of the UK.
