Daily Life and Social Contact

Four Seasons Healthcare’s quality and clinical governance agenda outlines that every member of staff has a personal responsibility to ensure social activities are a part of residents care.

The transition to a care service provider can be a major life change for both the incoming resident and their family. One of the most frequently asked questions is how the resident’s quality of life will be affected and, more specifically, will they be able to carry on with their hobbies and other valuable social activities.

At Four Seasons Health Care we believe that these social activities are a core part of our resident’s happiness and wellbeing, which is why we believe it important to issue guidance to all of our Care Homes, in the form of a manual based upon research into Social Activities. We firmly believe in providing residents with a transition into a care service which puts quality of life at the centre of their time at our homes and social activities play a large part in this. Social activities are much more important than mere recreational experiences and have been proven to promote both mental and physical wellbeing.

In order to ensure social activities are as effective and tailored as possible, Four Seasons works with residents and their families on an individual basis to decide which social activities they want to be involved in. Engaging with people on an individual basis in this way can be used to tailor activities for the more independent resident, as well as providing ideas for new social activities, giving residents a stake in how their home is run.

By getting to know about the lives of residents we can build a picture of the activities they have been interested in and so devise ways of maintaining engagement with each resident. Wherever possible social activity planning is carried out in conjunction with relevant local organizations, ensuring the regional community plays a part in the care of the residents.

All work carried out building resident’s activity plans is monitored by both Home Managers and their respective Regional Managers. These monthly audits are a vital tool to ensure that each resident is getting the quality of life they deserve through social activities and each home is encouraged to surpass these standards. Social activities have a high profile in each home and details of them are posted on notice-boards along with other activities designed to increase participation.

We believe that our residents deserve individual care and the choice and availability of social activities should reflect this belief. By engaging with each resident on a personal basis we can build tailored activities which will prove to be a worthwhile experience. In doing so residents and their families can be safe in the knowledge that the life-changing transition into care becomes a positive one designed to improve quality of life, rather than something to fear.

Each Care Home has a designated Personal Activities Leader (PAL) who in conjunction with the Home Manager, staff, residents and families develops and co-ordinates a programme of activities for all of the residents.
