Shauna-rooney-staff-nurse

13 Apr 2015

Shauna Rooney, a Staff Nurse at Rush Hall Care Home in Limavady, has been shortlisted for the 2015 national Nursing Standard Nurse Awards.

Qualifying as a nurse only two years ago, Shauna was nominated for the award by Gary Cousins, Infection Control and Clinical Development Nurse for Four Seasons Health Care Northern Ireland, after implementing a successful Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) pilot programme in the home. Shauna also helped other staff members to develop their knowledge of IPC and understand how the theory could be best applied in clinical practice.

Avoiding the spread of infections is important, particularly within a care home environment, as older people tend to have a weaker immune system. Additionally care homes often provide care for residents who may be living with a cognitive impairment and therefore are not as aware of the risk of infection. As a result, staff need to be able to help with hygiene measures to avoid preventable illness.

Gary said, “We are delighted that Shauna is a finalist for the 2015 Nursing Standard Nurse Awards. Her dedication to developing her fellow staff members’ understanding of best IPC care meant that the pilot programme was a resounding success, and we wish her the best of luck.”

The Nursing Standard Nurse Awards recognise nursing professionals across the UK who have demonstrated clinical excellence and whose innovations have helped to improve the quality of patient care. Finalists from each category will attend the award ceremony on 1st May at The Savoy Hotel in London, and all winners will be considered for the overall award, RCN Nurse of the Year 2015.

Murdoch-house-long-service

8 Apr 2015

The Mayor of Wokingham presented five staff members at Murdoch House in Berkshire with a prestigious award to recognise their long service to the home.

If you add together all the years, including two 20-year awards, the five staff members have 98 years’ service in total. Senior Care Assistants, Susan Galsworthy and Vicky Chapman came to work at Murdoch House straight from school, aged 16. They have 41 years’ service between them. Senior Care Assistant, Janet Nugent has been with us for 24 years; Deputy Manager, Marie Hughes for 17 years and Housekeeper, Wendy Chapman has worked for us for 16 years.

Home Manager, Christine Tyrrell said, “We are delighted to be celebrating a total of 98 years of loyal service to Murdoch House. They have all demonstrated their dedication and loyalty to the home and our residents year after year. I’m looking forward to many more years of working with each and every one of them!”

Next year, Home Manager, Christine will be celebrating her 10 years at Murdoch along with another three members of staff, taking the long service total up to 138!

Hydration-Week-NI

7 Apr 2015

Belmont and Holywood Care Home’s in Northern Ireland recently celebrated National Nutrition and Hydration Week by running special events to mark the importance of good food and drink for those in their care.

This week is a great chance for us to develop a range of activities aimed at highlighting to our staff, residents and their loved ones just how important good hydration and nutrition are. We have done this by holding tea parties with plenty of tasty treats and a selection of different teas, coffees and chilled drinks.

Practice Support Manager, Melanie Bowden said, “Our chefs are trained to meet specific dietary requirement for everyone they are preparing meals for as well as taking into account all their likes and dislikes. They give a lot of thought to their menus and of course, residents are consulted about what they’d like to see on there. It’s so important to get it right.”
