Karen Bell
Care Home Manager
“I believe that experience isn’t always essential but passion is the key in the field of care.”
Karen has worked in the Care Management sector for over 25 years; she is passionate about teamwork and keeping standards of care high ensuring a happy and fulfilled place for residents to live.
Are there any highlights in your career you are particularly proud of?
I’m proud of the high standards of care that I’ve kept up in my career. I have been able to achieve this as I’ve been lucky enough to always work with a good team who have always supported me and been reliable. A specific highlight in my career that makes me proud is that we haven’t had Covid in our home for two years, this has been down to our preparation and my team following the rules and regulations I put in place to ensure both my teams and residents safety.
What do you enjoy most about your role and the people you care for?
I love coming to work, I enjoy caring for my residents and seeing my team. We all work together to ensure the residents have a fulfilled and happy life in Benarty View Care Home.
What are your favourite hobbies and pastimes?
Outside of work, I have a very busy home life with my family and my 30 animals! I have 7 dogs, 6 cats, ponies, sheep, guinea pigs, and rabbits and the list goes on. Animals are great for companionship and therapy; at Benarty View, we have a 30-year-old cockatiel who came with me from my last home. We also get regular visits from Charlie the puppy who comes to work to help entertain the residents.
What are your qualifications and experiences?
I have been a Home Manager for over 25 years and I am a registered nurse. Next year will be my tenth year working with Four Seasons Health Care.
What top tips would you give someone when looking for the right care home?
My tips for anyone looking for the right care home would be to keep an eye out for key things such as; do the residents and team look happy? Is the home clean and tidy? Is the team interacting with the residents and relatives? Finally yet importantly, what is your initial instinct – from feedback that I have received, first impressions begin in the car park, so check to see if the front lawn is well kept and the reception is tidy.
What words of encouragement would you give to someone thinking about taking a role in care and in care homes?
Be dedicated and passionate. I believe that experience isn’t always essential but passion is the key in the field of care. When I’m speaking to someone new, I’m always trying to see how energetic they are, in a care home we need people who are friendly and happy to create a fun and enjoyable environment for our residents and team.
