Four Seasons Health Care ran two workshops at the Alzheimer’s show at Olympia on June 5th and 6th. This show, run in association with the Alzheimer’s Society, is the UK’s only dedicated exhibition and conference for those affected by dementia.

Joanne Agnelli and Jessie McGreevy from the dementia services team delivered guest presentations at the show and helped to man the stand, where an old fashioned sweet trolley proved hugely popular.

The event, attended by over 1,000 people, showcased best practice in dementia care. Notably the attendance was made up, not only by healthcare professionals, but also by people living with dementia and their care partners.

Joanne Agnelli, Dementia Services Quality Manager, Northern Ireland, Wales and Isle of Man said: “Excellence in dementia care is at the forefront of what we do within the organisation of Four Seasons Health Care. That being said, we have a social responsibility to share our knowledge to enhance the expertise and subsequent experience of others who live with dementia outside of our care settings. The opportunity to speak at the Alzheimer’s Show was an opportunity to disseminate the innovative work that is constantly evolving in dementia care”.

It was a real family affair at Ringshill Care Home when mother and daughter Debbie and Georgie Northrop who both work at the home celebrated a 60th birthday for Debbie and change of job for Georgie. Georgie can be seen here in the photo opening her present.

Rather than celebrate within the privacy of their own home Debbie and Georgie wanted to party with the residents at Ringshill.

“It’s like one big family at Ringshill so we wanted staff and residents to join in on our celebrations. They are all such good fun and we knew we would have a lovely time,” said Debbie. "The residents and staff arranged two separate parties to make us both feel special. There was some lovely food and everyone had helped decorate the party room. I had an amazing cake too. We were blown away by the kindness and generosity of everyone. I love being part of such a wonderful friendly atmosphere.”

It was ice cream, sand and seaside fun at Wansbeck with a beach party themed event in aid of Dementia Awareness Week and the opening of the new ‘Bloody Mary Cocktail Bar’ in memory of one of their late residents, Mary Swalwell.

“Mary was a really sociable person and would have loved the idea of a bar to meet for a chat and a laugh. Mary's family kindly donated the money for the bar as a way of saying thank you to the home for the care their mum had received at Wansbeck, ” commented Home Manager Denise Torbet . “It was a particularly emotional day because the family were asked to open the bar and they were overwhelmed what our maintenance man had achieved.”

The sun came out to make the day feel extra special and the residents, families, staff and wonderful local community had a great time with drinks, food and nostalgic seaside activities.
