The team at Ringshill Care Home in Huntingdon decided to take advantage of the nice weather and treat their residents to a boat trip along the River Ouse. The boat sailed from the Hartford Marina along the River Ouse to St Ives with glorious views and wildlife for everyone to enjoy.

Family and friends were also invited to join in on the day. Everyone was able to have a picnic lunch on deck with the sun shining down on them. The boat trip was arranged and staffed by The Ladybird Trust. They are a charity funded organisation who provide boat trips for the elderly and disabled throughout several months of the year. The trips do not cost anything and rely entirely on donations.

Karen Waddington, Home Manager, told us “It was a lovely day for a trip along the river. The sun was gleaming which just added to how great the day was. It was great that friends and families could also come along to join us – we all enjoyed a delicious picnic in the sunshine. We all can’t wait to go again next year”.

Howdon Care Centre in Wallsend recently received a generous donation from North Tyneside Council. They were chosen in 2014 as one of the main charities to focus their fundraising on by Tommy Mulvenna, Chairman of North Tyneside Council, when he stepped into the role.

Through dedication from the team at Howdon, residents, Councillor Mulvenna and other council members, Howdon was presented with £1300 in donations from various fundraising activities throughout the year. The money will be put towards giving the garden a makeover for the residents to enjoy. It will also help Howdon with our PEARL (Positively Enriching and Enhancing Residents' Lives) accreditation – this is a specialised dementia service recognised by Four Seasons Health Care.

Councillor Mulvenna has since said, “I would like to give a special thanks to the team at North Tyneside Council for their generosity and support through all the fundraising events. The organisations I picked support such fantastic causes and the money we are donating will help to continue the excellent work they do”.

The activities team at Howdon were able to collect the cheque on behalf of the home alongside the Relative’s Support Group Chair Lady.

Ruth Todd, Home Manager, told us “It was such an honour for Howdon Care Centre to be chosen as one of the charities. The money has helped improve all aspects of the home and in turn improve the experience residents gain from us. I can’t thank Councillor Mulvenna and North Tyneside Council enough for their generous support”.

The Sycamore and Poplars Care Home in Warsop recently made the decision to set up their very own Memory Café, which will run at the home on the last Wednesday of every month. The team came up with the plan of a Memory Café as a way of people in the surrounding areas joining together with residents to have a chat and take part in various activities at the home.

The first Memory Café took place September 30th 2015 and was a complete success. Visitors from the local area attended the home and shared their memories of the areas they have lived in – residents also got involved to speak about their fond remembrances of Warsop and neighbouring places. Tea and biscuits kept visitors refreshed throughout the afternoon which they ended with a sing along altogether.

Lucy Stupple, Home Manager, told us “The Warsop Memory Café turned out to be a brilliant afternoon. We had a number of visitors who thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They all left great feedback and said they would love to join us again in the next session. It’s lovely to be building these kinds of bonds with local people and hear all their memories of the area we live in. I can’t wait for the next one”.

The Sycamore and Poplars will be hosting the Memory Café on the last Wednesday of each month up until Christmas in the Poplars Conservatory 1pm-3pm. Please contact the Care Home for more details.
