Residents at Howdon Care Centre in Wallsend recently enjoyed an Oomph! session which is a form of exercise class designed to transform the quality of life of older people through a fun and healthy activity.

Everyone got involved and danced around to some 70s music – residents were showing off their best disco moves. Janet Storey, Personal Activities Leader at Howdon, is trained in providing the sessions and has seen first-hand the benefit it has on residents.

Ruth Todd, Home Manager, told us “We all get involved in the Oomph! sessions at Howdon no matter what your abilities are. Everyone has fun which makes doing exercise an enjoyable activity. This week we had a 70s theme so all music was from this era so we saw some fabulous disco moves!”

Who are Pepsi and Fudge I hear you ask? They are two very friendly Lop Eared Rabbits who belong to The Sycamore and Poplars Care Home in Warsop. The residents had the pleasure of looking after the visitors for the day which involved a lot of cuddles and carrots!

Residents told us how much they love having Pepsi and Fudge around the home – it gives an extra sense of home as many have had rabbits and other pets throughout their lives. Pepsi and Fudge were thoroughly spoilt with carrots and lettuce which we’re told are their favourites, and they definitely weren’t short of cuddles.

Karen Gilbert, Home Manager, told us “Pepsi and Fudge are always very popular here at Sycamore and Poplars – the residents really enjoy having them around for the day. They are so friendly and will always come for a cuddle. It’s lovely to have them here”.

At Woodview Care Home in Lincoln there are a number of special little characters the residents love to spend time with. Woodview is very lucky to be home to Laurel and Hardy – the guinea pigs, and Mim – the cat.

Having pets at Woodview gives it a real sense of home as many of the residents have had pets previously. The guinea pigs are a firm favourite and everyone loves having cuddles with them. Mim is a real lady of leisure and is often found sleeping for most of the afternoon in her favourite chair. She is a very sociable cat and wanders around the home getting attention everywhere she goes.

Woodview are also very lucky to have a minibus which they frequently take day trips out in. Naomi Allan, Personal Activities Leader, told us “We quite often take a little trip out in the bus, even if it’s just for a coffee or a bite to eat. Once the weather gets a little better we have a number of trips arranged to go to the coast for a seaside stroll”.
