Stoke on Trent Professionals take the Dementia Experience

The team at Tall Oaks Care Home in Stoke on Trent opened the doors to professionals last week as they invited them to complete the Dementia Experience.

As part of the training for the programme, everyone in the home has the opportunity to partake in the dementia experience which enables them to walk in the shoes of people who live with dementia.

“We wanted to share this experience with the local authority professionals in our area, so they had a greater understanding when it came to placing people in our care,” explains Home Manager Hannah Barrington-Parry Cahalane.

The Dementia Experience is in essence, completing routine daily tasks like pairing socks, putting CDs in cases, buttoning a shirt etc, with the limitations those living with dementia have to endure. Participants were gloves on their hands, have goggles that have stickers on to obscure vision and white noise played in their ears as a distraction.

Hannah Barrington-Parry Cahalane added: “The professionals got stuck in with the experience, and were shocked with the way it made them feel. They said it’s definitely given them a greater sense of empathy with the people they come into contact with on a regular basis.”

Kathryn Bentham, Locality and Social Action Officer Staffordshire Moorlands, said: “The training was brilliant. A real eye opener. I want to thank Hannah and her team for facilitating it for us.”

Residents, relatives and the care team at North Court Care Home in Bury St Edmunds have been busy raising both money and awareness for a variety of organisations.

On the 21st September, the home did something special to mark World Alzheimer’s Day. The residents enjoyed a morning of sports followed by a variety show in the afternoon. The team set up an information point in the reception where visitors to the home were encouraged to find out more about Alzheimer’s.

Ieleen Belen, Home Manager, said: “The Alzheimer’s Day was a great success. We had lots of positive feedback not only from residents and their families but also visitors to the home who wanted to understand a little bit more about Alzheimer’s. It was a good way for us to help raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and the help that is available out there.”

A week or so later, the home celebrated the Macmillan Coffee Morning event, which saw a variety of bakes being enjoyed by everyone. The day was a huge success with £200 being raised for this good cause.

Ieleen Belen, Home Manager, added: “'We are so fortunate for all the support we have had and it is so nice to see our tearoom so busy!”

Izzy the Pet Therapy dog has been keeping the residents at Bon Accord Care Home in Hove busy, as she continues to regularly pop in for a fuss and a play.

Barbara Evans, Home Manager, said: “Izzy is a firm favourite with the residents and the team here. She is a boxer cross who will do anything for a biscuit. She comes in every other week to visit, and is happy to be stroked. The residents especially like Izzy because her coat is so soft.
