Winter Warmers - 13th December

Baking buddies Rosaleen and Heather reminiscence together

This story gives us a lovely warm feeling because it demonstrates the value of all of our colleagues in our homes to our residents no matter what their role, from those in the kitchen to the maintenance person.

Here, Catering Manager Heather chats with her old kitchen buddie Rosaleen about their time working together in the home.

Rosaleen began her journey at Sandringham Care Home in Northern Ireland when she started covering shifts in the kitchen under Heather.

Rosaleen would help bake treats such as sponge buns and cakes for the residents. She was very chatty and popular, often having banter with the residents, colleagues and visitors in the home. She was also very particular about making sure the undersides of the saucepans were sparkling clean and would encourage the other kitchen staff to make sure they were cleaned to her high standards.

When Rosaleen needed the support of a care home she moved into Sandringham and eventually into the Sandringham dementia community. Although Rosaleen sometimes has trouble remembering things, she always recognises Heather, calls her by name, greets her with a smile and recalls the good times they had in the kitchen.

When Rosaleen is feeling particularly distressed, Heather will come and spend some time chatting and reminiscing with Rosaleen to provide reassurance and a friendly, familiar face.

Watch Rosaleen and Heather talking about the laughs they had in the kitchen over cup of tea and cake here:
